{"id":84,"date":"2023-10-19T15:31:49","date_gmt":"2023-10-19T19:31:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ar.bu.edu\/2023\/?page_id=84"},"modified":"2023-12-05T01:24:34","modified_gmt":"2023-12-05T06:24:34","slug":"new-way-of-thinking","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/ar.bu.edu\/2023\/new-way-of-thinking\/","title":{"rendered":"Artificial Intelligence"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3 class=\"p1\">USING AI TO EXPAND OUR LIMITS<\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Some liken the advent of generative artificial intelligence to the invention of the printing press\u2014a disruption for the ages. <\/b><\/span><span class=\"s2\">Tools such as ChatGPT are rapidly expanding the limits of research, innovation, and knowledge creation\u2014the very substance of our mission.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">While our researchers are busy harnessing artificial intelligence and machine learning to make advances in medicine, our experts in computing, data sciences, and ethics, along with our students, are collaborating to develop policy and practices for research and classwork as this new age dawns.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s2\">PEDAGOGY IS NOT STATIC<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cWe teach students to think through writing\u2014this idea is perceived to be under threat,\u201d says Chair of Faculty Affairs for Computing &amp; Data Sciences <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/sth\/profile\/wesley-j-wildman\/\"><span class=\"s2\"><b>WESLEY WILDMAN<\/b><\/span><\/a>, who is also a professor of philosophy, theology, and ethics. Called the Generative AI Assistance (GAIA) Policy, it addresses grading and describes use in assignments, the disparity between students who use ChatGPT and those who don\u2019t, and the pedagogically productive applications of the technology. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">\u201cThe printing press changed the way we think, changed the way we taught each other,\u201d says Wildman. \u201cIt changed everything about education. This is similar in scale.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">The student-led GAIA Policy calls for a practical and beneficial incorporation of ChatGPT into the learning experience, rather than a complete ban.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">Wildman shared the policy with other faculty members, including those on the <span class=\"s2\"><b>CDS ACADEMIC COMMITTEE<\/b><\/span>, \u201call of whom indicated that it would be good for other courses to adopt or use as a starting point.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The printing press changed the way we think, changed the way we taught each other. This is similar in scale.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\u2014 Wesley Wildman, Chair of Faculty Affairs for Computing &amp; Data Sciences<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s2\">DETECTING DEMENTIA IN YOUR VOICE<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\">For others at the University, the benefits of artificial intelligence and machine learning are very clear.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">Engineers at BU have developed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/articles\/2022\/could-a-computer-diagnose-alzheimers-disease-and-dementia\/\">a machine learning\u2013powered computational tool<\/a> that can determine from a simple voice recording your likelihood of developing Alzheimer\u2019s.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">Currently, it takes a lot of time\u2014and money\u2014to diagnose the disease. After running lengthy in-person neuropsychological exams, clinicians must transcribe, review, and analyze every response in detail.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">The researchers found a way to detect cognitive impairment from audio recordings of neuropsychological tests\u2014no in-person appointment needed. Their findings were published in <i>Alzheimer\u2019s &amp; Dementia: The Journal of the Alzheimer\u2019s Association.<\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">\u201cThis approach brings us one step closer to early intervention,\u201d says Distinguished Professor of Engineering<span class=\"s2\"><b> <\/b><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/eng\/profile\/ioannis-paschalidis\/\"><span class=\"s2\"><b>IOANNIS PASCHALIDIS<\/b><\/span><\/a>, a coauthor on the paper and director of the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/hic\/\"><span class=\"s2\"><b> RAFIK B.
