{"id":110,"date":"2024-09-27T11:15:49","date_gmt":"2024-09-27T15:15:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ar.bu.edu\/2024\/?page_id=110"},"modified":"2024-11-21T07:57:45","modified_gmt":"2024-11-21T12:57:45","slug":"lungs","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/ar.bu.edu\/2024\/cure\/lungs\/","title":{"rendered":"A Revealing Look at the Lungs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>A Boston University researcher\u2019s innovation has opened a new realm for discovery: real-time observation of our bodies&#8217; most fundamental systems\u2014starting with the lungs. <\/strong>Collaborating with colleagues across the University, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/eng\/profile\/hadi-nia-ph-d\/\"><strong>Hadi Nia<\/strong><\/a>, assistant professor of biomedical engineering, developed a system that allows the lungs of a mouse to be studied outside the body.<\/p>\n<p>As crucial as they are to our existence, lungs\u2014especially those affected by disease\u2014still hold many mysteries for scientists. Even advanced technologies such as MRI and CT scans don\u2019t adequately support detailed analysis. Nia&#8217;s \u201ccrystal rib cage,\u201d more formally known as LungEx, uses a ventilator and perfusion pump to keep the lungs working and a transparent container around the lungs to allow for immediate observation.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_505\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-505\" style=\"width: 1034px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/2024\/files\/2024\/10\/22-1626-NIA-001-1024x819.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-505 size-large\" width=\"1024\" height=\"819\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ar.bu.edu\/2024\/files\/2024\/10\/22-1626-NIA-001-1024x819.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/ar.bu.edu\/2024\/files\/2024\/10\/22-1626-NIA-001-636x509.jpg 636w, https:\/\/ar.bu.edu\/2024\/files\/2024\/10\/22-1626-NIA-001-768x614.jpg 768w, https:\/\/ar.bu.edu\/2024\/files\/2024\/10\/22-1626-NIA-001.jpg 1090w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-505\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Biomedical engineer <strong>Hadi Nia<\/strong> helped develop a system that allows the lungs of a mouse to be studied outside the body.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>This lets Nia study the lungs at the molecular level, closely observing and monitoring the air sacs and capillary vessels in mouse lungs at work. And this, in turn, creates a better understanding of lung resilience against diseases like cancer and pneumonia. \u201cAs these diseases progress, there comes a critical point where the progression becomes irreversible, leading the lung toward collapse rather than resolution,\u201d says Nia. \u201cOur goal is to predict these critical points at which the entire lung is at risk of collapse.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Along with its valuable insight into lung disease, the crystal rib cage has applications for other studies of the human body. It\u2019s been used to image the heart in conjunction with the lungs, offering greater understanding of pulmonary hypertension or arrhythmia. Similar studies are anticipated to visualize a functioning brain. And the crystal rib cage can advance research efforts related to regenerative medicine and organ transplants.<\/p>\n<p>In early 2024, Nia was awarded an esteemed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/articles\/2024\/three-bu-scholars-receive-2024-sloan-research-fellowships\/\"><strong>Sloan Research Fellowship<\/strong><\/a> for this innovation.
