{"id":35,"date":"2024-09-27T10:44:55","date_gmt":"2024-09-27T14:44:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ar.bu.edu\/2024\/?page_id=35"},"modified":"2024-10-28T14:06:00","modified_gmt":"2024-10-28T18:06:00","slug":"coral-reefs","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/ar.bu.edu\/2024\/climate\/coral-reefs\/","title":{"rendered":"Coral Reef Insight, Coral Reef Survival"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Rising ocean temperatures are taking a toll on marine environments\u2014especially on the Caribbean coast of Panama, where <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/articles\/2023\/coral-scientists-study-how-to-save-coral-reefs-climate-change\/\">BU researchers have discovered a coral reef in jeopardy<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Only a year ago, Associate Professor of Biology <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/biology\/people\/profiles\/sarah-w-davies\/\"><strong>Sarah Davies<\/strong><\/a>, an expert on coral, studied the Panamanian reef. Upon hearing reports of coral \u201cbleaching\u201d\u2014a loss of color due to warming temperatures\u2014Davies sent her lab team back to see what was happening. In the western Pacific Ocean, the team discovered some that can withstand higher water temperatures, which may suggest how corals can adapt. And they are further encouraged by their recent discovery of multiple healthy Panamanian corals that are over 60 feet in circumference, indicating that these corals have survived for hundreds of years and remain healthy even after the hot 2023 summer.<\/p>\n<p>Scientists, including Davies, think the organisms doing well in the face of climate change are able to adjust to varying conditions and reproduce consistently. Further study is needed, but even this can be challenging due to a lack of consensus on how to analyze reef health. Davies led 60 other scientists in authoring a paper to initiate agreement on symbiont assessment and genetic sequencing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe put forward these types of experiments and hope this paper is a framework for moving the field forward,\u201d Davies says.
