Felson<\/strong><\/a> (SPH\u201984) and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/camed\/profile\/tuhina-neogi\/\"><strong>Tuhina Neogi<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0(SPH\u201908,\u201909), professors of medicine and epidemiology, to help identify treatments that reduce the need for knee- and hip-replacement surgeries.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/eng\/profile\/alex-green-ph-d\/\"><strong>Alexander A. Green<\/strong><\/a>, an associate professor of biomedical engineering, is leading a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.darpa.mil\/\"><strong>Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency<\/strong><\/a> study, supported by up to $12.5 million, to analyze biomarkers that assess readiness for physically and mentally challenging tasks, with the goal of developing a rapid, portable saliva test that can help predict performance.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>A BU team has won a $3 million <a href=\"https:\/\/new.nsf.gov\/funding\/opportunities\/us-national-science-foundation-research-traineeship-program\"><strong>National Science Foundation Research Traineeship<\/strong><\/a> award. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/eng\/profile\/elise-morgan-ph-d\/\"><strong>Elise Morgan<\/strong><\/a>, College of Engineering dean ad interim and Maysarah K. Sukkar Professor of Engineering Design &amp; Innovation; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/eng\/profile\/mary-dunlop-ph-d\/\"><strong>Mary Dunlop<\/strong><\/a>, associate professor of biomedical engineering; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/eng\/profile\/christopher-chen-m-d-ph-d\/\"><strong>Christopher Chen<\/strong><\/a>, William Fairfield Warren Distinguished Professor and director of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/kilachandcenter\/the-centers\/biological-design-center\/\"><strong>Biological Design Center<\/strong><\/a>; and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/eng\/profile\/ahmad-s-khalil-ph-d\/\"><strong>Ahmad (Mo) Khalil<\/strong><\/a>, professor of biomedical engineering, will train a diverse, interdisciplinary group of PhD students over the next five years in the area of biological control, which focuses on understanding and replicating the abilities of living systems to self-regulate and adapt to environmental changes.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>A team of researchers led by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/camed\/profile\/darrell-kotton\/\"><strong>Darrell Kotton<\/strong><\/a>, David C. Seldin Professor of Medicine and director of the <a href=\"https:\/\/crem.bu.edu\/\"><strong>Center for Regenerative Medicine<\/strong><\/a>, has been awarded a $14.3 million grant from the National Institutes of Health\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhlbi.nih.gov\/\"><strong>National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute<\/strong><\/a> to develop stem cell\u2013based therapies for currently incurable genetic lung diseases affecting children and adults, including an inherited form of emphysema, cystic fibrosis, and primary ciliary dyskinesia.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>Professor of Psychiatry<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/camed\/profile\/casey-taft\/\"> <strong>Casey Taft<\/strong><\/a> has been approved for a $2.9 million funding award from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pcori.org\/\"><strong>Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute<\/strong><\/a> to conduct a trial of a trauma-informed partner violence intervention program that has proven effective for military veteran populations.
