At BU\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/ceid\/\">Center on Emerging Infectious Diseases<\/a> (CEID), two researchers are playing a key role in a global initiative focused on detecting and preparing for future outbreaks.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The initiative, Epistorm: Center for Advanced Epidemic Analytics and Predictive Modeling Technology, is a multi-institution collaboration funded by a $17.5 million grant from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_755\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-755\" style=\"width: 1109px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/2024\/files\/2024\/10\/24-1419-AR1-004.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1099\" height=\"879\" class=\"wp-image-755 size-full\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ar.bu.edu\/2024\/files\/2024\/10\/24-1419-AR1-004.jpg 1099w, https:\/\/ar.bu.edu\/2024\/files\/2024\/10\/24-1419-AR1-004-636x509.jpg 636w, https:\/\/ar.bu.edu\/2024\/files\/2024\/10\/24-1419-AR1-004-1024x819.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/ar.bu.edu\/2024\/files\/2024\/10\/24-1419-AR1-004-768x614.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1099px) 100vw, 1099px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-755\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">CEID researchers <strong>Kayoko Shioda<\/strong> and <strong>Laura White<\/strong> use data to inform predictive models of disease outbreaks.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/sph\/profile\/laura-white\/\"><strong>Laura White<\/strong><\/a>, professor of biostatistics, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/sph\/profile\/kayoko-shioda\/\"><strong>Kayoko Shioda<\/strong><\/a>, assistant professor of global health, who head the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/ceid\/research\/data-science-surveillance\/\">data science and surveillance research core<\/a> at CEID, are the lead collaborators from BU, which will receive $1.9 million from the award.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cThis CDC initiative is an exciting and important step in preparing for pandemic threats.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u2014LAURA WHITE<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Using wastewater surveillance, artificial intelligence, and other tools, these researchers are developing predictive models that gather data on outbreaks before they occur. This will allow hospitals and other community services to prepare and can help inform decision-making and policy during health emergencies. In particular, the research will emphasize disease development and spread in rural communities.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis CDC initiative is an exciting and important step in preparing for pandemic threats,\u201d White says. \u201cI am pleased to be a part of such an innovative and diverse team of scientists from across the country.\u201d Shioda concurs, calling the project \u201ca vital initiative dedicated to enhancing outbreak response capabilities in the US.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The human and economic costs of infectious disease outbreaks are almost incalculable.
