Yabaji<\/strong>, postdoc researcher at BU\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/neidl\/\"><strong>National Emerging Infectious Diseases Laboratories<\/strong><\/a><strong> <\/strong>(NEIDL), have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/articles\/2023\/researchers-find-potential-way-to-help-immune-system-fight-tuberculosis\/\">found a way to influence the body\u2019s immune cells<\/a> to make them better at fighting TB. Yabaji<\/strong> and <strong>Igor Kramnik<\/strong> have found a way to influence immune cells to fight TB.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Like other research being done at BU, this work is using the body\u2019s own systems to fight infection and disease. \u201cIt\u2019s a way of treating the host, the patient, rather than focusing on the pathogen,\u201d explains Kramnik. The discovery is crucial at this moment, because TB is becoming resistant to the traditional means modern medicine has been using to fight it.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cIt\u2019s a way of treating the host, the patient, rather than focusing on the pathogen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u2014IGOR KRAMNIK<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>A recent BU study showed that the standard TB vaccine was only about 37% effective in children under five years of age and offered no protection for adolescents and adults.
