{"id":115,"date":"2025-11-03T09:08:30","date_gmt":"2025-11-03T14:08:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ar.bu.edu\/2025\/?page_id=115"},"modified":"2025-11-25T16:55:32","modified_gmt":"2025-11-25T21:55:32","slug":"fhs","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/ar.bu.edu\/2025\/scientific-progress\/fhs\/","title":{"rendered":"The Framingham Heart Study: A Foundation for Discovery"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>The Framingham Heart Study continues to yield new insights\u2014decades after it began<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The 77-year-old <a href=\"https:\/\/www.framinghamheartstudy.org\">Framingham Heart Study<\/a> \u201ctold us that cholesterol, blood pressure, diabetes, smoking, diet, sedentary lifestyle\u2014these are the core risk factors for cardiovascular disease,\u201d says <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/camed\/profile\/donald-lloyd-jones\/\"><strong>Donald Lloyd-Jones<\/strong><\/a>, principal investigator and chief of preventive medicine at our Chobanian &amp; Avedisian School of Medicine and Boston Medical Center. \u201cIt saved a lot of lives around the world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gradually the study, a partnership between Boston University and the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, has widened to include most chronic diseases associated with aging. Thousands of researchers have derived more than 15,000 scientific papers from its data on 15,477 participants. Now, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/articles\/2024\/new-ai-program-could-predict-alzheimers-disease\/\">genomics and AI<\/a> have been added to its toolkit.<\/p>\n<p>One example: In the mid-2000s, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/camed\/profile\/rhoda-au\/\">Rhoda Au<\/a><\/strong>, a professor of anatomy and neurobiology, began collecting digital voice recordings of older Framingham participants. The recordings were recently studied using AI by a team at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/hic\/\">Rafik B. Hariri Institute for Computing and Computational Science &amp; Engineering<\/a>, logging speech clues that can reveal cognitive impairment likely to progress to dementia.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat\u2019s important about that now is, we actually have FDA-approved therapy to try to slow that progression.
