{"id":80,"date":"2025-10-31T15:24:32","date_gmt":"2025-10-31T19:24:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ar.bu.edu\/2025\/?page_id=80"},"modified":"2025-11-25T16:53:39","modified_gmt":"2025-11-25T21:53:39","slug":"cte","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/ar.bu.edu\/2025\/scientific-progress\/cte\/","title":{"rendered":"Diagnosing CTE"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Above: A new project at BU&#8217;s <strong>CTE Center<\/strong> looks for biological markers that indicate brain disease resulting from head trauma.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>$15M NIH grant bolsters University efforts to diagnose a brain disease afflicting athletes and veterans<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>One tragic aspect of chronic traumatic encephalopathy, the neurodegenerative disease linked to repeated head trauma, is that diagnosis always comes too late\u2014after death.<\/p>\n<p>A new study led by Boston University\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cte\/\">CTE Center<\/a> aims to change that.<\/p>\n<p>Funded by the National Institutes of Health, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cte\/our-research\/clinical-studies\/\">DIAGNOSE CTE Research Project\u2013II<\/a> will explore whether bloodwork and advanced brain imaging can identify biological markers of CTE. A diagnosis in living patients would open the door to potential treatments and offer hope to devastated families. The project builds on BU\u2019s first DIAGNOSE CTE study, launched in 2015, which helped define the disease\u2019s symptoms, including memory loss, difficulty solving problems, aggression, and poor impulse control.<\/p>\n<div class=\"responsive-video responsive-youtube\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"What If You Could Diagnose CTE While Someone Was Still Alive? | You Are Why\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ZIwaspB7PH4?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>CTE is a risk for those who played contact sports like football and hockey as well as for those who served in the military. BU neurologist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cte\/profile\/jesse-mez\/\"><strong>Jesse Mez<\/strong><\/a> recently conducted the largest study of male hockey players\u2019 brains, finding that the odds of developing CTE increased by 34% for each year of play. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/camed\/2024\/12\/04\/largest-study-of-cte-in-male-ice-hockey-players-finds-odds-increased-34-with-each-year-played\/\">The results were published in December 2024 in <em>JAMA Network Open<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<div class=\"bu-stat-list bu-stat-count-1 bu-stat-alignright \">\n\n\t\n\t\t\n<article class=\"bu-stat-single js-bu-stat-single bu-stat-has-description bu-stat-type-number bu-stat-theme-default bu-stat-has-max-characters-2 post-306 bu_stat type-bu_stat status-publish hentry\" >\n\t<div class=\"bu-stat-inner js-bu-stat-inner\">\n\t\t\n\t\t\n\t\t<div class=\"bu-stat-element\">\n\n\t\t\t<div class=\"bu-stat-value-container bu-stat-value-one  bu-stat-has-suffix bu-stat-has-suffix-percent\">\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"bu-stat-value\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"bu-stat-value-field\">34<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"bu-stat-suffix bu-stat-suffix-percent\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"bu-stat-value-field\">%<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div><!-- \/.bu-stat-value-container -->\n\n\t\t<\/div><!-- \/.bu-stat-element -->\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"bu-stat-description\">\n\t\t\t\tIncrease in chance for male hockey players to develop CTE, with each successive season\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n<\/article>\n\n\t\n<\/div>\n<\/p>\n<p>BU will form a research consortium led by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cte\/profile\/michael-alosco\/\"><strong>Michael Alosco<\/strong><\/a>, associate professor of neurology, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cte\/profile\/robert-stern\/\"><strong>Robert Stern<\/strong><\/a>, professor of neurology, neurosurgery, and anatomy and neurobiology, along with experts from other institutions. The study will enroll 350 people\u2014including 225 former college and pro football players\u2014for neurological exams, scans, and blood tests.
