From the President

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

YOU ARE WHY.

Boston University President Melissa Gilliam leaning against a slatted wood accent wallAt Boston University, we care about people and challenge one another to make discoveries that serve society. We are doers who come together to create a better world.

In my first year as president, we’ve launched initiatives to build upon our expertise in convergent research, to align with Boston Medical Center to speed research breakthroughs and identify insights to improve health, to better understand how we can use artificial intelligence for good, to make the arts front and center on our campuses, and to define and raise up our community’s shared values.

We’ve made tremendous progress with you, and the communities we serve, in mind.

That’s why we’ve also launched a coordinated effort we’re calling “You Are Why,” to think differently about how to make progress in a changing world, through innovative thinking and uncommon partnerships. It is about the people we serve—in Boston, across the country, and around the globe.

Of course, Boston University is already doing incredible things. And we are motivated by one thing—you.

You are why:

  • Research Professor Ed Damiano cocreated the iLet Bionic Pancreas with the potential to revolutionize the way people living with type 1 diabetes manage their daily lives.
  • Cancer survivor and College of Fine Arts master’s student Jieun Lim is using art to improve the lives of patients battling serious diseases.
  • We support the Greater Boston community, through the University’s Menino Scholars, City Scholar Summer Fellows, and Student Food Rescue programs.

Now, with your help, we will go even further.

In the year ahead, we will continue to expand our reach by deepening collaboration with industry leaders, corporations, foundations, elected officials, alumni, and supporters in Boston and around the globe. We look forward to hearing your ideas for how we can partner to support the next generation and improve lives.

Because when we work together, our impact multiplies.

Sincerely,
